There is an interesting strain of thought --- Christopher Alexander, Charles and Ray Eames, Herbert Simon --- which holds that the work of the designer is largely satisfying constraints. Norman doesn't touch on this at all, though he does mention some of the relevant books; he doesn't quite know what to make of Alexander, but then, nobody does.
